Counterfeit cosmetics are not only a value problem. Fakes are made outside any safety testing regime, and the ingredients in them are unknown by definition. If you shop beauty online, a few habits are worth building.
Compare the packaging against the brand's own site
Brands change packaging, but they change it everywhere at once. Fonts that are slightly off, a batch code printed in the wrong place, a missing ingredient list, or a shade name that does not exist in the brand's line-up are all worth pausing over.
Be suspicious of permanent discounts
Genuine brands run promotions, but a seller offering 70% off a current, in-demand product all year round is not buying at the same price everyone else is. Discounts on discontinued or short-dated stock are a different thing, and honest sellers say so openly.
Check that the seller says where stock comes from
A retailer should be able to tell you whether it buys from the brand, from an authorised distributor, or elsewhere. Vagueness on this point is the most common warning sign there is.
Judge the formula, not the box
If a product arrives and the texture is thinner, grittier or more strongly perfumed than you expect, stop using it. Trust that over the packaging — counterfeits are usually far better at copying a box than a formula.
Keep your proof of purchase
An order confirmation and a traceable payment method are what let you dispute a purchase later. Paying by direct transfer or through an unlogged channel removes that protection entirely.
